About the Role

The goal of the Publishing Performance and Intelligence Group (PP&I) is to help deliver next generation digital publishing at Springer Nature and as a result, grow the number of published articles, especially in open access (OA). Working closely with the Journals Group, Production, IT, Marketing and Customer Service, PP&I specifically aim at increasing the number of articles transfers between journals, growing the number of new collections, strengthening editorial engagement and enforcing editorial excellence.

The Centre of Excellence (CoE) is one of the vertical functions of PP&I and its mission is to primarily support the other PP&I teams and, in general, all relevant Journal Research teams to achieve their strategic goals. With this purpose in mind, we initiate and run several tactical and strategic projects with specific business outcomes. We are a team of professionals who embrace and apply best practice Project Management, Business Analysis, Continuous Improvement and Change Management.


Working closely with the Centre of Excellence team members, the Workflow Solution Specialist (WSS) contributes to quick-wins and small projects by developing and supporting simple workflow optimisation solutions for PP&I and SN Journal Publishing teams. As junior professional who has been previously exposed to process analysis and workflow optimisation, the WSS builds, maintains, and improves automation solutions using a range of off-the-shelf software such as, for example, Google Documents, Smartsheet and Monday.com. They also support training and roll out of the new technology, and act as second and third line of support for existing software.


Role Responsibilities:

  • Lead multiple concurrent engagements to implement solutions across a variety of use cases, based on requirements and/or specifications, ensuring customers are gaining the most value.
  • Support discovery sessions to understand customer's current state processes, business challenges, and future state requirements to design a custom solution that achieves their desired business outcomes.
  • Build solutions via solution prototyping, iterative build sprints, compelling customer demonstrations, and collecting and incorporating feedback.
  • Serve as an advisor on best practices and capabilities of the technology at scale across a variety of workflows and business functions.
  • Review and validate solution designs by performing internal solution testing, creating customer-facing user acceptance test scripts, and facilitating end-user acceptance testing with customer stakeholders.
  • Improve and optimise existing solutions as per new requests and specifications.
  • Maintain and support existing solutions ensuring best quality and availability of service.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience within STM publishing experience is essential.
  • Experience of supporting journal workflows is essential.
  • Experience with using and configuring workflow-supportive technologies is essential.
  • Experience of building and improving workflow automation solutions is desirable.
  • Experience in process optimization, continuous improvement or business analysis is desirable.
  • Familiar with workflow automation solutions such as, for example, Google Documents, Smartsheet, Monday.com and willing to develop technical knowledge of these platforms.
  • Familiar with the concept of building and delivering solutions iteratively based on specifications.
  • Genuinely interested in technology platforms and naturally passionate about innovative process automation.
  • Demonstrate a highly analytical and logical approach.
  • Always demonstrates a customer focussed attitude.
  • Demonstrate excellent time management, able to plan and prioritise own activities while working flexibly under broad direction.
  • Work in a high-pressured environment and to tight deadlines.
  • Strong time-management and organisational skills
  • Educated to degree level.
  • Any form of certified proficiency in workflow automation solutions would be desirable.
  • Project Management certification – desirable
