Job Introduction
The Newsgathering and Deployment team is one of the most strategic teams of the new operating model of World Service. Sitting at the heart of our Content operations, it drives both reach and impact by coordinating for maximum creativity and innovation.
Main Responsibilities
As a one of 3 Senior News Editors, in Newsgathering and Deployment who follow the sun, you will be responsible for the deployments of newsgathering teams across Asia and beyond – sharing the footprint of World Service reporting teams across the world. Your teams will support the 24 hour digital-first gathering, production and distribution of news for World Service and when required into BBC News. You will support the gathering of responsive and planned gathering of journalism including from remote, often dangerous, corners of the world.
You will judge the potential for each deployment – whether breaking news or planned send. Each deployment will inspire talented, distinctive and bold world class reporting and content
Are you the right candidate?
As the Senior News Editor of Newsgathering and Deployment, Asia, you will:
- Have a track record in managing deployments in a variety of conditions, including difficult or hostile environments, quick clear decision making in breaking news scenarios
- Be highly skilled at managing numerous and diverse issues under tight timescales, managing competing priorities and judging the potential value of each send.
- Have creative approaches to how teams will gather value-added content in line with our digital-first priority and audience needs, a desire to develop stories and push for new lines and access.
- You will work to develop individual reporters and producers within your area. Meeting regularly and supporting their story ideation, development, pitching and delivering and their understanding of the topic and formats to maximise impact.
- With other senior staff in languages– you will set and deliver against a clear editorial strategy for gathering and reporting stories that will lead our distinctiveness
- Have expert knowledge of our audience’s needs, current market trends and challenges, and deep knowledge of newsgathering digital and output processes across Asia, as well as that of competitors.
- Experience of solving complex editorial and legal challenges, managing significant budgets and understanding key financial drivers.
- Have experience of managing staff across locations and adapted at bringing multiskilled teams together from across departments to deliver key journalism
- Experience of nurturing talent and creating environments for them to develop and refine their skills including feedback strategies
- Set and deliver a clear editorial strategy for content production and it’s rollout and deliverables to maximize reach and impact across the department and where appropriate beyond
- Be highly skilled at managing numerous and diverse senior and executive level stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales and managing competing priorities
- Be internally and/or externally recognized as a promoter of diversity and inclusion
- Have experience in managing significant budgets and understanding key financial drivers.

Base: This role can be based out of any major bureau including Islamabad, Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta, Hong Kong.
