Job Summary:
The Health Infection Control (HIC) Nurse, also known as an Infection Prevention and Control Nurse, is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring infection prevention and control programs within healthcare facilities. They work collaboratively with healthcare teams to prevent and control the spread of infections among patients, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement infection prevention and control policies, procedures, and protocols based on evidence-based guidelines and best practices.
- Conduct regular surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and communicable diseases within the facility.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, including physicians, nurses, and Infection Control practitioners, to identify and investigate outbreaks or clusters of infections.
- Educate healthcare staff on infection prevention and control practices, including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and environmental cleaning.
- Provide guidance and support to healthcare teams in implementing standard and transmission-based precautions for patients with infectious diseases.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate the spread of infections in healthcare settings.
- Monitor compliance with infection prevention and control practices and recommend corrective actions as needed.
- Participate in the development and review of facility policies and procedures related to infection prevention and control.
- Collaborate with occupational health and safety teams to ensure the health and safety of healthcare workers.
- Stay updated on current trends, emerging pathogens, and best practices in infection prevention and control through ongoing education and professional development.
Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice; certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Clinical experience in infection prevention and control, epidemiology, or public health.
- Strong knowledge of microbiology, infectious diseases, and principles of infection prevention and control.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and guidelines from organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to educate and train healthcare staff on infection prevention and control practices.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and implement effective interventions.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and other healthcare technology platforms.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and lead infection prevention and control initiatives.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of infection prevention and control.
