Tata Medical Center Fellowship Program

Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery

Conceptualized in the year 2004 as a philanthropic initiative for the Eastern and North-Eastern
parts of India and the neighboring countries, the Tata Medical Center (TMC) started operations in
Kolkata on May 16, 2011. The hospital is governed by a charitable trust – Tata Medical Centre Trust.
It is an integrated Oncology facility with well-trained professional staff and equipped with modern
facilities and the most contemporary medical equipment. Set up at a cost of Rs. 350 crores, the
Hospital, with a capacity of 183 beds, serves all sections of the society, with 50% of the
infrastructure earmarked for free or subsidized treatment for the underprivileged sections. Tata
Medical Center is currently in an expansion mode with another 250 beds being added to the current
bed strength. The hospital provides a wide spectrum of services from diagnosis, therapy to
rehabilitation and palliative support in cancer. The Institution's objective is to excel in service,
education and research.


The Department:


The Department Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at Tata Medical Center is an academic,
multidisciplinary center dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and research of head and neck cancer
with infrastructure to perform complex ablative and reconstructive surgery, including
microvascular reconstruction, in all types of head and cancer.


Fellowship Objectives:


Impart training in protocol based management of head and neck cancer in a

multidisciplinary setting 

Introduce the trainee to basic and advanced surgical concepts and techniques of surgical
oncology pertaining to the head and neck region 

Impart intensive training in reconstructive surgery towards the end of the fellowship with
introduction to concepts of microvascular reconstruction. 

Encourage participation in clinical, basic and translational research.


Fellowship Duration:


2 years

Eligibility Criteria

Essential:
M.S degree in ENT or General surgery

Desirable:


• Work experience in Head and Neck surgical oncology
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Participation in Clinical or Basic Sciences Research


Clinical responsibilities:


• Assessment of new patients
  • Planning and delivery of treatment under different levels of supervision as appropriate
  • Follow up and assessment of outcome.
  • Organize and present cases in multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Discuss service development and clinical trials projects
  • Record data for the purposes of clinical audit and trials

Academic responsibilities:


• Collation and analysis of patient data for purposes of research and publication
  • Training junior doctors/ nursing/paramedical staff
  • Management of outreach and prevention clinics with collection and organization of data.

Expected Rotations/Work Schema:


• Head and Neck Surgery-17 months, including 2 months of out-of-institute posting.
  • Reconstructive Surgery-4 months
  • Radiation Oncology-1 month
  • Anesthesia and ICU Management-1 month
  • Laboratory/ Basic Sciences Rotation- 1 month

Evaluation:


6 monthly and end of training evaluation of based on log book records, self-assessment, Continuous
Assessment of Surgical Training (CAST) scores.
