Role purpose


  • Risk and Compliance Assurance Services (RCAS) is a new team that is at the forefront of delivering innovative Assurance solutions for and on behalf of HSBC’s 2nd Line of Defence Assurance teams and Risk Stewards. Our industry leading senior management team supported by our specialist Centres of Excellence (CoE) will deliver an Assurance proposition that unlocks value for the Group, strengthens our control environment and delivers sustainable success. This is a role within the Professional Practices team and is accountable to the Head of Planning & Standards, Professional Practices.
  • The role contributes to the global standardised Assurance approach ensuring that it is aligned to the bank’s Risk Management Framework (RMF). It is responsible for contributing to the delivery of global initiatives and deliverables that support the functions end-to-end Assurance work over risks and controls. The role holder has experience of risk management assessment methodologies and is an expert in producing and facilitating innovative and interactive training content.
  • The role holder will be required to assist, and at times lead, the delivery of global initiatives including:
  • The continuous enhancement of the Second Line of Defence (2LoD) Assurance standards for planning. Including the creation and use of models to drive risk-based approach as well as addressing regulatory expectations and emerging risks. This will involve:
  • Collaborating with Group SoX and other Assurance Providers to develop a more streamlined annual Assurance plan for SoX processes and controls
  • Influencing the Entity Level Control (ELC) bank wide expansion programme to develop an efficient and high value approach to Assurance over ELCs
  • The governance over 2LoD Assurance plans, their refresh and the reporting of progress to senior governance forums
  • The continued enhancement and embedding of the Coordinated Assurance Framework across all three lines of defence and all risk types. This will be through the set up and management support of the Coordinated Assurance Steering Committee where Assurance plans are consolidated and analysed with the intention of reducing duplication and concentration of coverage where possible
  • Delivery of fast paced support and advice to Assurance Providers on the bank wide Assurance Principles and Standards (APAS)
  • Proactively identifying areas where guidance, communication and training is required to embed the APAS, in particular with reference to Planning
  • Designing interactive content for global training, including facilitation of global Spotlight sessions
  • Although this role is primarily focused on planning, there will be opportunity and expectation to be actively involved in other team activities such as standards, training and communications.
  • The role holder will be a dynamic individual that easily adapts, and champions change amongst peers and stakeholders whilst managing multiple deliverables across the different services offered by Professional Practices, and meeting timelines set. They will have the opportunity to establish and maintain a wide network of global colleagues and stakeholders across all risk disciplines and various management levels. Although the role holder will not have direct line management responsibility they will be expected to influence and drive forward the behaviours and practices of a large global group of stakeholders using their breadth of communication skills.

Governance and Committee Memberships (membership of ExCos, Risk Management Meeting)


  • No standing membership but on occasion may deputise for the Head of Planning & Standards.

What you’ll do: 


Accountabilities for Business, Customers and Stakeholders


  • Support Assurance teams and risk stewards to deliver high quality and timely work that is risk based, in compliance with the global Assurance standards, recorded accurately and timely in relevant systems, and accurately reported to global decision makers
  • Research, propose and deliver enhancements to the Assurance governance framework, principles, standards, guidance and ensure that Assurance work is focused on the appropriate risks, completed to the highest standards, meets all regulatory requirements, and is regarded externally as industry leading
  • Create innovative solutions to improve the efficiency, capability, and capacity of Assurance to deliver agreed plans and targets
  • Identify, manage, and take appropriate action to address any Self-Identified Issues (SIIs)
  • Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with all Assurance stakeholders to ensure smooth and efficient execution of tasks
  • Develop/maintain positive and professional relationships with stakeholders outside of Assurance
  • Challenge actions and behaviours that are not consistent with the banks values and culture and which are not in the best interests of our customers
  • Develop and deliver actions required to remediate any points raised by audit and/or external regulators

  • Promote the delivery of Professional Practices services through the embedding of industry leading standards and an effective training curriculum
